It all started early this afternoon. I was sitting at my computer with a hot cup of coffee, ready to read the world news headlines, procrastinating from venturing out into the windy and cold world that is Winnipeg. I logged onto my gmail account and was met with an email from a very nice man named Mercedes Bournias. At first, I thought Mercedes Benz (good gosh if it were The Mercedes I would have flipped, maybe they finally decided that my designs were good enough for their newest car!) but no, it wasn't Mercedes Benz. It was a nice man.
The email was titled A Note On Publishing Your Writing and right there, I knew that he had been reading not only my Mindsay, but also my DeviantArt! I almost choked on my coffee right there, but thank goodness I didn't! If I had, I wouldn't have been able to read the exciting news inside!
He started out by introducing himself and saying that he wanted to know if I was interested in professionally publishing any of my writing. (Do you even have to ask?!) There was an explanation about his company and how they can help me publish my work.
Mercedes closed with the line "we'd love to talk to you about any of your publishing projects and how _____ might be able to help."
When I told my parents, they laughed at me, telling me that my writing was good, but not that good. Always skeptical! They probably missed many golden opportunities such as this when they were my age and want me to do the same.
Nonetheless, I clicked the "click here for more information" button, and was brought to the company's website. They asked me if I had $500 as a down payment, and immediately I had to stop. The money I have saved up is for University. But, never fear! Mercedes is a gentle man, he would never allow someone such as myself miss out on something like this all because of a measley $500!
So I started filling out the form, but under the influence of a conscience. I filled out the information from where I used to live. I feel bad for whoever lives at my old address, and uses my old phone number. They'll be receiving ______'s Publishing Guide within the next 10 days. To make matters worse, I looked around their company's website, and found that they wanted most of the profits from my book! Even though I haven't wrote it yet! Damn Mercedes, he led me on. I was going to be rich!
I have to learn how to be more skeptical. Damn parents, being right. Maybe curiosity killed the cat, but being scammed kills the writer.
